Much of Summit County's development occurs in the "wildland/urban interface", meaning that homes and businesses are built in close proximity to forested areas. Summit County's forests currently have or are anticipated to have a high risk of wildfire, which places many of our homes and businesses in danger from wildfire.
To address the potential for catastrophic wildfire, Summit County Government, local fire districts, Colorado State Forest Service, U.S.D.A. Forest Service, the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments, towns and other entities joined forces to develop the Summit County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (SCCWPP). This plan outlines an active process for reducing hazards in the wildland/urban interface through fuel reduction projects. The Summit County Wildfire Council administrates a grant program to assist local homeowners' associations and neighborhoods in preparing and implementing fuel reduction projects.
Summit County will hold two workshops in March to help grant program applicants prepare viable fuels reduction projects and successful grant applications.

Burn Permits - Information and Applications
Summit County Landfill - Slash and wood waste accepted for composting. Must be clean and free of trash, rocks, concrete, and scrap metal to be recycled with wood waste. Dimensional lumber and pallets accepted. In 2009, stumps must be sorted from slash and will go to the landfill at landfill prices. Stumps cause too much wear and tear on the grinder and must be disposed of separately. Fees for slash and wood waste vary by season; call the landfill for details, 970-468-9263. Please try to find alternate means of disposal and consider the landfill as a last resort!
