Claudia Wiley, Summit County Open Space & Trails (970) 668-4092
Summit County, Colorado - Summit County Government’s Open Space and Trails Department held its 4th Annual Volunteer Recognition Evening on October 3rd at the Summit County Community & Senior Center for the many volunteers who assisted with the Adopt-A-Trail Program and who worked on various trail projects this summer.
“It was an awesome volunteer effort this year.” said Claudia Wiley, Open Space & Trails Technician. “We recorded 397 volunteer days this season. Volunteers gave over 2,300 hours of time, valued at over $43,500, in maintaining the recpath, open space properties and natural surface trails.”
Volunteers constructed over 4,500 feet of new natural surface trail, closed and restored 1,600 feet of unsustainable social trails that were causing resource damage, maintained 5,700 feet of existing trail, constructed rock walls and a 15 step stone staircase, in addition to many other maintenance tasks. Volunteers also maintained and monitored 40 miles of recpath and over 500 acres of open space properties. The County also started a reforestation effort with tree plantings at Fourmile Bridge Open Space and Iron Springs Open Space, planting 600 seedling trees with the help of volunteers.
In addition to thanking all the volunteers for their hard work, special recognition was given to a few outstanding volunteers: Steve Immer was recognized as the Recpath Volunteer of the Year for his work on a section of recpath near Summit High School and the Farmers Corner area. Chuck Ginsburg is the Natural Surface Trail Volunteer of the Year for his work with Summit County Off Road Riders (SCORR) on the Oro Grande Trail near Keystone and on Golden Horseshoe Trails.
Lynn Amstutz received the Third Annual Trudy Robinson Open Space Volunteer of the Year Award for her work monitoring and maintaining the Doig Meadow Open Space property, located in the Lower Blue. This award is named for Trudy Robinson, who was a founding member of the County’s Open Space Advisory Council and a long-time community volunteer on open space issues. Trudy passed away in January 2005. The award, which is presented on an annual basis, embodies Trudy’s passion and commitment toward open space protection in Summit County.
