Derek Woodman Biography

Derek Woodman, sworn in as Undersheriff of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) in January, 2004 by Sheriff Minor, is a dedicated family man. He and his wife, Mona, have been married for 25 years and they have 2 sons, Blake and Luke. Derek has long-term family roots in law enforcement; his father precedes him in the family’s dedication to law enforcement careers.

Following proudly in his family’s footsteps, Derek began his law enforcement career in 1981 as a deputy in the Summit County Jail. In the fall of 1982, with an increasingly strong desire to pursue and achieve higher levels of responsibility within the SCSO, he became P.O.S.T. (Police Officer Standards and Training) certified, thereby allowing him the opportunity to pursue many more career enhancing positions.

In January of 1983, at the age of 22, Derek was promoted to Chief Jailor, overseeing the overall operations of the jail division. Later he transferred to the patrol division as a patrol deputy. He was promoted to detective where he was responsible for the Summit County Drug Task Force, acted as chief investigator for the Coroner’s Office, ensured that the enforcement of all State and Local laws and ordinances were adhered to and was the evidence custodian. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to the level of sergeant with Special Operations. In this position Derek was responsible for direct supervision over the boat patrol division, winter back country patrol, all State and Local laws and ordinances pertaining to local recreation and was the liaison for Summit County Search & Rescue and Water Rescue.

In 1992 he was promoted to Captain of the operations division. In this capacity Derek was Undersheriff, as designated by the Sheriff, in excess of 200 days. He oversaw the overall day to day operations of the operations division, drug task force, records administration, civil division, school resource officer program, evidence processing, search & rescue and water rescue, major crimes investigations, HazMat and their respective overall budgets.

Derek has extensive training in: Crime and intelligence, resource management, crisis management, evidence collection and protection, emergency response, narcotics enforcement, budgeting and administration, personnel management, investigation and search procedures, traffic control operations, court testimony and firearms proficiency. He is the regional vice president of the State of Colorado Drug Investigators Association, and a member of the Summit Prevention Alliance – Drunk Driving Prevention Committee, the National Sheriff’s Association and the Colorado Sheriff’s Association.

Derek is an exceptional firm and fair leader with excellent communication skills. He is committed, dedicated and is proactive law enforcement professional with extensive experience recruiting, training and motivating teams. He has gained a solid, respectable reputation with diverse contacts in law enforcement and within the community. He is fully accountable for staffing, budgeting, policies, procedures, interrogation and overall crime prevention.
