IN THE NEWS-

Attention Trail Users!
Recreation Path Etiquette
Cycling season is upon us and it is a good time for everyone to remind themselves of some of the simple rules of the trail that help make Summit County riding some of the best in the country.

Many of the local single tracks and dirt trails are simply too wet and muddy to ride at this point of the season. If the trails are muddy, ride the paved recpath and roads until the dirt is dry. This will ensure the long-term sustainability of our favorite local trails.

When riding the recpath, please be considerate of other users. The recpaths are open to many forms of nonmotorized use, including runners, walkers, dog walkers, in-line skaters, cyclist and even special events. Expect crowded conditions, especially on weekends, and be prepared to slow down frequently.

Obey all traffic signs, signals and pavement markings. To prevent collisions and allow uninterrupted travel, pull off along the pathway shoulder when stopping. Please travel on the right side of the recpath and pass on the left, but only after signaling the other user and making sure it is safe to pass. Travel at a reasonable and safe speed, and in no event faster than the posted speed limit.

If you are walking a dog, please follow the Summit County dog control regulations (a leash is required on the recpath) and clean up after your pet.

Each of us has a responsibility to ensure that our trails are sustainable, safe and enjoyable for other users. Please do your part to help keep Summit County’s trails and recpaths places for others to recreate and enjoy.

Also, if you are interested in giving back to the local trails by learning basic trail construction and maintenance skills, contact the Summit County Open Space and Trails office at 970.668.4213. We can always use volunteers help to maintain some of our county’s greatest assets: our trails.
